How To: Embrace Change

Change is huge, whether it's a change in careers, college majors, living situations, family dynamics, or relationships.

Some change can happen suddenly and some can happen gradually.
Some change you have no control over but how you deal with it is up to you.

Why am I talking about change?
A couple of weeks ago, I was presented with an opportunity to switch teaching grades for the next school year.   This may seem like not much of a big deal, but for a teacher it's a huge decision.  There's a lot of factors that go into having a smooth school year for a teacher and switching grades can produce positive or negative results depending on how you look at it.

I wanted to share some things I did that helped me decide to take on the change and how I continue to embrace this new grade change.

These tips, I hope, can help inspire you to embracing a change you may be encountering now.

1. Weigh the pros and cons.
If the change is something you can control, take a moment to think about it.   You can make a list or just think about the positive impacts and the negative impacts that will come from the change.

2. Talk to someone.
Could be with your significant other, best friend, family member, co-worker, or whoever.
An extra insight may be helpful to hear.  You can discuss the pros and cons you've come up with or even hear out another person's opinion.  But remember, it is ultimately your decision not theirs.

3. Thank the past.
If changing is the path you decide to take then don't forget to thank the past.  Thank it for the experiences (good and bad) you have gained just by working through it.

4. Plan for the future.
Change can be sudden or it can take time, either way you can still plan for it so that it can run more smoothly.  Do some research or talk to others who may know more information to what you need to know to help with the transition.

5. Imagine and visualize.
This is your time to make a game plan and set goals for yourself.  How do you expect the change to take place, how do you plan to embrace it fully?

6. Dive head first.
Soak in the new opportunity and put forth effort into it.  The new endeavor will only be as successful as how much you put yourself into it.

If we can learn to embrace change, we can learn to take on anything.
